Amid the cheery brightness of the holiday season, one light shines bigger and brighter, illuminating her community as well as those around her. That bright light is Jackie Baures, a health and wellness coach in La Crosse. Baures’ energy radiates positivity and a genuine love for living life to the fullest. Baures is a fitness and health guru who won’t hesitate to try something outside of her comfort zone; she overflows with self-confidence and aspiration.

But it hasn’t always been this way.

Baures’ health journey began long before her significant weight loss. She was considered overweight for most of her life, starting around the age of five. Trauma suffered as a child led to Baures overeating in an attempt to regain some control of her life. “Around five or six years old, I was a victim of sexual abuse, and because of it I became an emotional eater. I didn’t know what to do or who to talk to,” she says. “It was my way of feeling better. I took comfort in food.” Beginning as a teenager and extending into her late twenties, she tried multiple weight-loss programs that showed no results. Baures eventually concluded that she was meant to be overweight.

Her wake-up call came when she was invited to Disney World in Florida with her family. “I didn’t want to go. I was afraid I would hold my family back by not being able to keep up with them,” Baures states. With the vocalization of this fear, she realized she was not living her life to the fullest.

Baures’ life changed when a friend invited her to an Herbalife Fit Camp class. “Everybody was so supportive. I felt like no one was judging me or laughing at me.” She joined the Herbalife community in 2016 and never looked back. Since then, she has lost over 75 pounds and has never felt physically or mentally better. “I look at life in a whole new way now. I’ve never been happier. ... I feel like I can accomplish anything!”

Since her journey began, Baures has run two half-marathons and is now training for her first triathlon in the spring and first marathon in the summer. “My ultimate goal is to complete an Ironman by 2019,” she says. Baures credits her success to her new mindset as well as the close-knit community at Herbalife. “We limit ourselves so much thinking we can’t accomplish this or that, when in reality, the only thing standing in the way of our goals is ourselves.”

Baures’ advice for those with health goals or who want to try something new are writing down your goals every month and creating a contract with yourself. This includes what you are willing to give up as well as willing to do to achieve your goals. Finding an accountability partner or a support group is the key to success. “I don’t think I could have accomplished what I did without the community I have here. This group has made me grow into the best version of myself.”
